Asarco smelting stacks in El Paso to be demolished April 13

Unless the weather doesn't cooperate, the Asarco smokestacks will be demolished at dawn on April 13 -- a Saturday.

Demolition workers will cut a notch in a section of the stacks that faces Interstate 10, a slot in the back and another gap in the middle. Then, when the all-clear is sounded, explosives will be detonated and the 825-foot and 612-foot stacks will fall simultaneously.

Details of the demolition were outlined Tuesday at a public meeting at the El Paso Main Library in Downtown. About 50 people attended and a few expressed concerns about the safety of the demolition.

For more than a century, the American Smelting and Refining Co. processed metals, including toxins such as lead, copper and zinc, on the site just west of Downtown along the Rio Grande.

My apologies for not getting back with you last night.

I doubt that they will be interested in me for the job that I applied at locally. The job isn't in my field, the pay wouldn't solve many of my problems and I wouldn't be satisfied working there.

I did receive some good news today for a job that I applied for online yesterday. This morning I received a phone call from the recruiter and provided additional information. I demonstrated enough knowledge that he is going to forward my application to HR to see if they are interested and hopefully I'll hear back from them within about a week. It is a software engineer position with a company that develops software for hospitals seeking reimbursement with Medicare/Medicaid and is based out of Plano. I've never billed myself as a programmer or engineer so it would give me another job title to add to the resumé if I need to continue searching.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, shining my shoes and prepping some good duds in case I get called in for an interview. If I can keep my nerves under control, I usually make a good impression (tall, thin and look about ten years younger than my actual age).

Some additional possibilities could develop if I get the job in Plano. I have a friend in Carrollton who is starting up a company dealing with marketing in the medical sector. I might be able to get some contract work on the side and it could lead to something very lucrative six to twelve months down the road. We've been talking over the past 7-8 months and he is mentioning salaries in the mid-60's to start with potential to grow to the $90K range after a year of employment. That would be an improvement over my last full time job and would chap my brother a bit since he complains about Obamacare hurting his profession. The irony would be delicious, but I would never rub it in his face. Humility is a virtue even though I'm a handsome devil!
