Tarrant commissioner (D) denied courthouse use for town halls ahead of November election

A Tarrant County commissioner was denied the use of a subcourthouse to host monthly town hall meetings leading up to the November election.

Democratic Commissioner Alisa Simmons requested to use the Arlington subcourthouse and waive $1,314.48 in related fees during a June 9 commissioners court meeting. Her Republican colleagues — County Judge Tim O’Hare and commissioners Matt Krause and Manny Ramirez — voted no, while Simmons and fellow Democrat Roderick Miles voted yes.

Only Krause explained his vote, saying it seemed like Simmons was attempting to reserve the courthouse for political use. O’Hare and Simmons are opponents on the November ballot as both seek the countywide judge seat he currently holds.

“It seems very coincidental, maybe, that these town halls line up right when the election season is ramping up,” Krause said. “Kinda seems like it to me, maybe, we’re using the fee waiver and access to the courtrooms for political activity.”
