Insurance commissioner on her way out

Last edited Sat May 25, 2013, 06:04 AM - Edit history (1)

Texas Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman announced to her staff Thursday that she would not continue in her role as head of the state’s insurance regulatory agency.

She cannot serve beyond Monday, the final day of the legislative session, because her appointment has not been confirmed by the Senate.

Kitzman, who has been in charge of the Texas Department of Insurance since the summer of 2011, informed workers at the department during a briefing about the fertilizer plant explosion in West, the agency confirmed.

Kitzman was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry in the interim between legislative sessions and never received the necessary confirmation of two-thirds of the state Senate.

[font color=green]Kitzman had a base salary of $163,800. In addition, for the twelve month period from November 2011 through October 2012 she billed the state $12,000 in travel expenses and also billed the National Association of insurance Commissioners $34,000 in various expenses. She was literally a global traveler with trips to London, Bermuda, Singapore, and the Grand Cayman Islands, although her travel expenses were limited to Texas towards the end of that time period.
