Ex-officer gets jail time for assault on handcuffed woman

MONTEPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A former Vermont police officer who admitted to striking a handcuffed woman in a holding cell has been sentenced to up to six months in jail.

Jason Lawton 34, a former sergeant with the St. Albans Police Department, was sentenced Wednesday in Superior Court to three to six months behind bars, according to the state attorney general’s office.

Lawton had previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault in connection with the November 2019 incident. He faced a maximum of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. A judge ordered him to report to jail on Jan. 14.

“good” cops that look the other way, etc.

I don’t think that leaves that many truly good cops.

Yeah ... well they generally exhibit extreme behaviors when they think nobody's watching. Did you ever think about that?

Go post some "good cop" videos. That makes all the abuse of power okay, right? Rah rah, right?

6. Policing in the USA is broken. I'm not sure it can be "fixed."

In my hometown & county, several current LEOs were the most blatant criminals in the area back in the day. Another was our most prolific drug dealer. My own brother was a local cop until he got fired for egregious behavior, and some of the things I know about him would curl your hair. So, I tend not to hold LEOs, in general, in very high regard. I know a few generally righteous fellows who were LEOs for a while, but they all eventually got disenchanted and found other professions.
