Alburgh sets date for runoff election

ALBURGH, Vt. — Voters in Alburgh are being asked to vote for a second time after the selectboard race ended in a tie on Town Meeting Day.

The town put out a call for candidates days before the election, after no one stepped up to run. Two candidates – Tom Ward and Bernard Savage – pursued write-in campaigns, which ended with a tie vote of 144 to 144 on March 3.

Under Vermont law, the candidates have the option to withdraw or force a runoff election. If neither steps aside, the town has up to 22 days to set a date.

The town of Alburgh has scheduled the election for March 31. The original candidates will be the only ones on the ballot.
