Police: Person in custody at Bridgewater College in Virginia, shelter in place continues

ROCKINGHAM, Va. (WJLA) — A person is in custody, but a shelter in place continues at Bridgewater College in Virginia following the report of an active shooter on campus Tuesday afternoon.

Bridgewater College in Virginia announced on Twitter the report of an active shooter on campus at 1:24 p.m. Tuesday.. A shelter in place was issued for the campus, and police are on the scene.

At 1:25 p.m., the school posted a note saying, “This is not a test. More info to follow.”

Bridgewater College is a private liberal-arts college in Bridgewater, Virginia.

State police were called to campus due to an active shooter incident.

At least one law enforcement officer has been shot in a gun-related incident at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Deputies from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office are responding to reports of an active shooter at the college, a law enforcement official told ABC News.

The shooter is in custody, according to a tweet from Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

"I have been briefed on the situation at Bridgewater College. The shooter is in custody and state and local police are on the scene. I will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with law enforcement," Youngkin said.

The Harrisonburg Police Department has also responded to the scene. The FBI is also sending agents to the scene, according to a spokesperson.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) - College officials report that there was an active shooter on the Bridgewater College campus. A Bridgewater College Campus Law Enforcement Officer and Campus Safety Officer were shot during this incident. A suspect is now in custody.

A Bridgewater College student tells WHSV the campus community was notified that the two officers shot were killed.
