Supervisor Kristen Umstattd (D-Leesburg) will bring a resolution to recognize June as LGBT Pride Month up for a vote during the Board of Supervisors' July 5 meeting. ... The proposed proclamation, which Umstattd initially planned for Thursday instead of the July 5 meeting, comes in the aftermath of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history took place at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla.
Umstattd’s proclamation aims to “acknowledge the struggles” of those Loudoun parents with LGBT children, as well as Loudoun's LGBT residents.
“All of the county's residents should be able to live without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence or hatred based on gender identity or sexual orientation,” Umstattd said in announcing the proclamation. “Recognizing, unfortunately, that is not always the case in our communities, the proclamation calls for acceptance and respect for all our residents.”
Shortly after the resolution was announced, Will Estrada, chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee and former candidate for Leesburg supervisor, issued a statement condemning Umstattd's proposal.

Loudoun County Supervisor Ron Meyer (R-Broad Run) says he is considering introducing a change to the board’s rules of order that would limit the scope of what supervisors can propose and place on meeting agendas, including items such as resolutions and proclamations. ... The supervisor’s proposal comes as the board’s Democrats in recent weeks have brought forward resolutions that would recognize Gun Violence Awareness Day and LGBT Pride Month.
"Resolutions should be used to unite the county, they shouldn’t be used to sort of try out religious, political, ethnic divides,” Meyer told the Times-Mirror. “A resolution is for celebrating things, are for things specific to the county and if you look at our current rule of order, it's very specific on what sort of things those are, and we're probably gonna have to make those things a little more specific."

Umstattd says that as an elected official, even at the local level, it's impossible to avoid difficult votes and conversations that affect the community. She argues it's the board's responsibility to be a part of such discussions.

When asked if the rules change was in response to the recent resolutions on Gun Violence Awareness Day and LGBT Pride Month, Meyer said it was in response to “whatever’s next.” ... "There's nothing wrong with being aware of criminal gun violence, there's nothing wrong with celebrating everyone in our community, but there is something wrong with politically-motivated stunts,” Meyer said. ... "If we want to go legislate every single political issue, every single cultural issue, every single social issue, I can hire a proclamation and resolutions writer and we can pass hundreds and hundreds of hundreds and we can debate every single issue happening across the country. Is that really the best use of the Board of Supervisors’ time?”

Supervisor Meyer used to be the mouthpiece for a Koch Brother’s funded front group, “Young America’s Foundation.”
Fortunately, Loudoun County isn’t a Koch Brothers enterprise so Mr. Meyer, you’re just going to have to learn to live with people disagreeing with you.
