Peoples Climate March in Colonial Williamsburg - Saturday 4/29
Williamsburg, VA - April 25, 2017 - At the upcoming People’s Climate March in Colonial Williamsburg, several political leaders will join a collection of local climate/environment experts to address marchers about the threat posed by manmade climate change and the importance of protecting the local environment.
Among the area’s civic leaders confirmed to speak are:
State Senator Monte Mason
Delegate Mike Mullin
Former James City County Supervisor Jim Icenhower
Kelly DeLucia, candidate for the House of Delegates in James City County
Linda Periello, the mother of Democratic candidate for governor Tom Periello
In addition, these researchers and climate experts will be speaking:
Gerald Johnson, Professor Emeritus at William & Mary (Geoscience)
Christopher “Chuck” Bailey, Professor at Williams & Mary (Structural Geology)
Molly Mitchell, Researcher at William & Mary (Wetlands Management)
Dawn Forgit, Teacher at WJCC Public Schools
The People’s Climate March in Colonial Williamsburg will take place on Duke of Gloucester Street on April 29th in conjunction with similar events taking place nationwide.
The Williamsburg march is a “sister march” affiliated with The People’s Climate Movement, a project organized in 2014 as an alliance of dozens of organizations working together to solve the climate crisis. Its national affiliation notwithstanding, the Williamsburg event was organized entirely through the initiative and efforts of local individuals and organizations in Williamsburg and James City County.
Although the Williamsburg march is non-partisan, its sponsors consider recent moves by the Trump administration to constitute an ill-advised and dangerous abandonment of environmental protections that have enjoyed widespread bipartisan support for decades.
Participants will gather in front of the Colonial Courthouse on Duke of Gloucester Street at 4:00 PM where the speaker presentations will take place. When the speakers have finished, attendees will march east to the Capitol Building then back west, finishing at Merchants Square.
