2. This used to be a felony

It was the only felony that typically drew a fine without prison time. I remember a case in the 60s where a guy shot an eagle in an enclosure at a zoo. He was about to be drafted but you are not eligible with a felony on your record. He was sentenced to the maximum 30 days in jail (apparently it now carries a year sentence) by an angry judge, but he said he was satisfied with that since refusing the draft typically drew a 5-year sentence.

Before I get blasted, I am not condoning shooting eagles in zoos; just reporting the facts.
