Bluegrass barnstorm for Wayne Powell!!!

An American music legend comes to Culpeper next week to stump for the retired U.S. Army colonel seeking to unseat the district’s longtime Republican congressman.

The musically inclined political event is in support of Democratic congressional candidate Wayne Powell, 61, aRichmondnative running against Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Richmond in the November election.

Powell, like Cantor, is an attorney. He spent 30 years in the military.

The Powell campaign criticized Cantor for doing out-of-state fund-raising, providing a list of dozens of events in places likeBeverly Hills,Las VegasandNew York. The name of theStanleybarnstorm references the criticism along with the song in the movie for which the bluegrass legend won a Grammy.

“Wayne Powell has a message that will resonate,” said Saunders, senior advisor in John Edwards’ 2008 presidential campaign. “This idea of coin-operated government has gone on too long … the king of it is Eric Cantor. We are going to expose it and we are going to tell the people about it.”

The Powell-Stanley barnstorm will conclude Oct. 24 with a 7 p.m. concert in Glen Allen at theCulturalArtsCenter. Stanley and the Powell will also make district stops that day inAshland(8:30 a.m. at the Ashland Coffee and Tea Company), Mineral (2 p.m. atWaltonPark) and Goochland (4 p.m. at the White Hawk Music Café).

All of the Oct. 24 stops will feature live music, food and drink as well as brief comments from Powell, according to Brendan MacArthur, press secretary for the Powell campaign. The entire barnstorm is open to the public, he said.
