Republicans who control the legislature have the task of confirming Democratic Gov. Ralph Northams appointments. On Tuesday, they said one of them wasnt going to fly.
Republicans on the Senate Privileges and Elections Committee voted to remove Susan Swecker from the Virginia Compensation Board, a small state agency that funds constitutional offices such as commonwealths attorney and sheriff and provides them with training.
Swecker, who chairs the board, is also chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia, and Republicans said someone in such a partisan role should no longer remain in a position that the public would expect to be nonpartisan.
Swecker was first appointed to be chair of the three-member board four years ago under then-Gov. Terry McAuliffe. But she wasnt the Democratic Party chair at the time. She took on that role about a year later.
