Democratic lawmaker in Virginia holds hammer-and-sickle image behind colleague aligned with Democratic Socialists

RICHMOND, Va. — A Democratic lawmaker apologized Monday after jokingly holding up a hammer-and-sickle image behind Del. Lee Carter, a freshman legislator who is also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Del. Mark Keam, D-Fairfax, later apologized on the House floor for using a tablet to hold the Communist symbol behind Carter, D-Prince William, at a meeting of the House of Delegates Finance Committee. But the episode could further strain relations between House Democrats and the anti-corporate left.

During a debate on legislation to offer tax breaks to companies that create jobs in economically depressed areas, Carter said the bill may be a “good-faith effort to help combat poverty” but it relies on a “deeply flawed mechanism.”

“That mechanism of racing to the bottom of cutting and hacking and slashing away at our tax code to try to fight over scraps and handouts from billionaires rather than trying to build the economy from the ground up that will actually help the people that are already here,” Carter said.

You worked for Verizon as a corp. exec. and counsel previously and in 2009 decided to run for state office. You should know better: the Red Hammer & Sickle display behind Carter while he was speaking, Not cute..

Del. Lee J. Carter represents parts of Prince William Co. (Manassas), and in the legislative session segment seen on VIDEO correctly emphasizes the growing issue that residents of his area face concerning outside developers coming in to build higher cost properties that will possibly force people out of a region already known for continuous sprawl, traffic congestion, rising housing costs and longer commutes.

His constituents having to move further and further out, away from the DC Metro Area in order to find affordable housing beyond Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier and Stafford County exurbia, to other places in Va. like Petersburg is not inconceivable. Overdevelopment and all that comes with it is a serious matter in Va. esp. in the last 20+ years.

Effective and hard working, Rep. Carter of Manassas addresses the needs of the people, his constituents and district. Last Nov. he ran for office for the first time and beat the GOP Majority House Whip. Impressive. Carter's record and background as an IT specialist and former Marine is outstanding. Keam, of Vienna, Va., and since 2010 Delegate from parts of Fairfax Co., not so much.
