Federal judge denies Shaun Brown a new trial in fraud case

A federal judge on Wednesday denied a new trial for a community activist and former congressional candidate who was convicted late last year on federal fraud charges.

Senior U.S. District Judge Henry Coke Morgan Jr. rejected Shaun Brown’s motion for a new trial just before he handed down a four-year punishment on the felony counts.

The judge gave Brown three years in prison — plus another year of home confinement — after a jury in Newport News federal court found her guilty of bilking a summertime program that feeds needy children.

A few weeks before the sentencing, Brown’s attorney filed a motion contending that three of the 12 jurors who voted to convict her lived in Williamsburg — part of the congressional district she ran for last year.
