Gov. Ralph Northam declares state of emergency, bans all weapons from Capitol grounds
By Amy Friedenberger amy.friedenberger@roanoke.com 981-3356

RICHMOND — As thousands of gun rights advocates and other armed groups prepare to rally outside the Capitol next week, Gov. Ralph Northam announced Wednesday he’s declaring a temporary state of emergency to ban all weapons from Capitol Square.

“Hate, intimidation and violence have no place here,” Northam said at a news conference Wednesday.

I think that pulling another Charlottesville is not acceptable and Gov. Northam is making a sound decision.

I was in C-Ville when they were Downtown and marching/chanting with Tiki torches. Downtown there were hundreds of them holding automatic weapons and dressed military style. That was just insane, provocative and threatening, which was the point it seems.

It did not end well as with the skirmish and beatings in the parking facility and the tragic death of that young woman, Heather Heyer.

This is really an affront to peaceful protesters who do not bring weapons to their demonstrations and the civility of our society by making the holding and brandishing of a weapon in public without reservation a sign of protest or freedom. They most certainly are not.

I would have had 10,000 troops surrounding those idiots at all times. If they had inquired, they would have been told that if they even wave around a bright orange water pistol, they would ALL be arrested and processed as a danger to the peace and the general welfare. Every single one of them who was not a native Virginian would have answered for federal charges, and the locals would have to answer to the state as well. But, that's just me...
