In Bremerton to discuss homelessness, Inslee says 'We've got to build more housing'

BREMERTON — Gov. Jay Inslee visited Bremerton on Friday to discuss homelessness in Kitsap County.

Inslee met with local leaders in an hour-long roundtable discussion at the Bremerton Salvation Army, including Bremerton Mayor Greg Wheeler, Kitsap County officials, organizers with the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance and people who have experienced homelessness.

“The experience of Kitsap County is very similar to everyone else in the state,” Inslee said in an interview with the Kitsap Sun after the discussion. “Everyone has some kind of housing challenges. Because rents continue to outpace wages.”

The governor's visit to Kitsap County is part of a listening tour on homelessness across the state. Inslee visited a severe weather shelter Lewis County on Thursday. Last week, he toured Tacoma’s stability site — the city's tent facility that serves as a large-scale homeless shelter.

The county has invented so many new regulations about septic systems, set backs, wiring, insulation, heating, windows, etc. And the fees are astronomical.

I have a friend who is finishing his modest retirement home and he says the regulations cost him an extra $200,000 over the previous house he'd built. BTW, this one is half the size.
