'This time of the year is the worst': Homeless residents await opening of winter shelter

BREMERTON — More than a dozen people, most tucked under sleeping bags or wrapped in blankets, lined the sidewalk behind the Salvation Army as another chilly November night set in last week.

For many, the first of December couldn't arrive soon enough. That's when the Salvation Army opens its winter homeless shelter, which will run through the end of March.

In the meantime, those on the streets are bracing for the cold weather, as temperatures continue to drop amid November's rains.

“Nobody should be out here," said Katrina Sprague as she sat outside the Salvation Army last Wednesday night. The 40-year-old spent last winter at the shelter inside.

there is a few shelters for the cold season for the homeless but it only opens when it is only a few degrees above freezing.

It seems like dangling that carrot in the horse's face and saying you can't get it until you should have gotten it a long time ago.
