Crews work to cleanup oil spill at Shell Puget Sound Refinery in Anacortes

ANACORTES, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Ecology is cleaning up a crude oil spill at the Shell Puget Sound Refinery in Anacortes.

At about 11:45 p.m. Friday, crews were transferring nearly five million gallons of Alaskan north slope crude oil from the Crowley Maritime barge to the refinery when about 15 to 20 gallons spilled, according to the state department of ecology.

A containment boom is in place, covering an area of about 225 feet by 30 feet, officials said.

The source of the spill was determined to be a pressure relief valve. Officials say the leak is now secure.
