Trump administration wants brief by retired Washington judges put on ICE
The Trump administration wants to block a U.S. District Court judge from considering a brief filed by 17 retired Washington judges on the "chilling effect" of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents making immigration arrests in and around the state's courthouses.
The friend-of-the-court brief backs Attorney General Bob Ferguson in a suit, filed in December, that challenges the administration practice of staking out courthouses to catch undocumented immigrants. The AG is seeking a preliminary injunction to block ICE from making what he calls "disruptive" arrests.
The 17 jurists include retired State Supreme Court Justices Faith Ireland and Bobbe Bridge as well as four former Washington Court of Appeals judges and 11 former superior and municipal court judges from King, Chelan, Spokane, Benton and Franklin counties.
The brief is highly critical of using courthouses for arrests. The presence of immigration agents has created "a damaging, chilling effect deterring non-citizens from participating in the justice system," the judges wrote. "Non-citizen perception of judges and judicial personnel as assisting ICE harms trust in the judiciary."
