Bainbridge Island eyes raising sales tax for affordable housing

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — City leaders are looking at raising the city’s sales tax to fund affordable housing projects — a measure that would need voter approval.

At a Bainbridge Island City Council meeting Tuesday, a majority of members expressed general support for putting a sales tax on the ballot, though they stressed discussion is still in its early stages.

The proposed 0.1% sales tax would net Bainbridge around $500,000 per year for affordable housing, according to the city’s finance department. The money would be targeted for affordable housing projects assisting low-income households, either through constructing new facilities or funding operations and maintenance costs for new units.

“I think we all agree that affordable housing is a true issue (and) a real crisis in our community,” Councilman Kol Medina said at the meeting. “And the only way to make a real dent in it is with land and money…. This is the best way for our community to potentially get some money in our system.”

Granted, minimum wage is higher but then cost of living is way higher and we will not qualify for affordable housing. It is killing us.
