Flurry of transportation and housing activity comes to Northgate

The urbanization of Seattle's Northgate neighborhood is accelerating with two initiatives, including construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Interstate 5.

In addition, the Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) and the city this week said they will work together on a new master plan for the redevelopment the Northgate Apartments, 11060 Second Ave. NE. Late last year, SHA bought the 8.5-acre property with 211 units of lower cost housing for $65 million, agency spokeswoman Kerry Coughlin said Wednesday.

The planning, according SHA, entails writing the plan for "a new mixed-use community" called Northgate Commons. It will expand affordable housing and have community and social services, market-rate housing and commercial space.

Going forward with a redevelopment is dependent on partnering with the city and others, Coughlin said. Funding has not been secured, and there are no imminent plans.
