Study: Tech pay gap in Seattle falls short of national average

You’d think that Seattle’s status as one of the U.S.’s most powerful and thriving tech hubs would mean it’s a great place for women in tech to work.

But not so, says a study from SmartAsset, a financial education company. For the sixth year in a row, SmartAsset ranked the 59 best U.S. cities for women working in the tech industry.

Seattle’s ranking? Thirty-second on the list, barely in the lower half of all of the cities that made the ranking.

Only 81 percent of women’s median earnings in Seattle match what their male colleagues earn, said AJ Smith, SmartAsset’s vice president of financial education. The national average, she said, is 83 percent.
