12 routes coming to new downtown bus lanes; good news for West Seattle, ferry commuters

Twelve bus routes will shift onto Columbia Street starting Saturday, which could provide a small relief to the "Seattle Squeeze."

The section of Columbia Street from Alaskan Way to Third Avenue will have two new bus lanes going eastbound and westbound. The routes it affects -- the 21 Express, 37, 55, 56, 57, 113, 120, 121, 122, 123, 125, and the RapidRide C Line -- had delays throughout the year, especially in the summer months of 2019. Collectively they serve over 26,000 riders daily.

Bus-only lanes streaked with red paint will be on the street where a ramp to the now completely gone Alaskan Way Viaduct once jutted out from First Avenue. The street will be one-way only -- toward the waterfront -- for other vehicles.

The project, which cost King County, Seattle and the state of Washington $3.5 million, included new water and sewer lines, electrical infrastructure, drainage system and new sidewalks in addition to the four-lane street.
