Over 50% of Seattle Public Schools' seniors apply for city's tuition-free college program

More than half of Seattle Public Schools' graduating seniors applied for a program that offers free tuition for two years at community colleges in the city.

Seattle Promise gives students the chance to attend one of Seattle's colleges -- North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College -- tuition-free for two years, or 90 credits, as part of the Families, Education, Preschool and Promise levy approved by Seattle voters in 2018.

It covers a student's remaining tuition balance after "other public funding, grants or scholarships a student may be eligible to receive have been applied."

Along with tuition, the program provides students in need with financial support for resources such as books and housing, in addition to guidance navigating college. It is open to all students regardless of GPA or income.
