600-pound sea lion found in Washington woods

A sea lion wandered far from home in Cowlitz County over the weekend, leading to a standoff with deputies.

The Steller sea lion, weighing around 600 pounds, was discovered in a wooded area near Garlock Road outside the town of Castle Rock.

The animal was about two miles from a viable water source, according to OregonLive.

Sheriff's deputies, Fish and Wildlife officers, and representatives from the Cowlitz County Humane Society had to wait several hours for a trailer to arrive to transport the animal back to the water.

I commute along this stretch of the Cowlitz and across Delameter Creek. There was a good smelt run this month; F&W actually opened a brief fishing window. The sea lions and eagles always come up the river after the smelt. This one took it a little farther up the creek. Our idea of "viable water" and hers probably differ.

I like to think she was checking on the culverts that the courts ordered must be fixed to allow salmon through. But maybe she was scouting an escape route for when they start killing sea lions for eating the fish.
