Amazon email scam targets Pierce County residents

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of an email scam targeting Amazon users.

According to the notice, a victim reported receiving an email from an Amazon-like address that notified them of unusual activity on their account. The email then directed the user to click a link where they were redirected to a phone number. When the individual called the phone number, the phone was answered by someone posing as an Amazon employee telling the victim they owed $5,000 that needed to be payed immediately.

The victim was then directed to buy Target and Best Buy gift cards and provide them to the scammer.

Deputies reported multiple instances of the scam, noting grammar and spelling errors as red flags. They also warned residents that if someone demands payment over the phone it is most likely a scam.

I shouldn't have to say this but if anyone tells you to buy a gift card to pay off a debt it's an obvious scam.
