Pierce County Confirms 80 New Coronavirus Cases Thursday

TACOMA, WA — The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department confirmed 80 additional cases of the new coronavirus Thursday, for a total of 498 COVID-19 illnesses and seven deaths linked to the disease since the outbreak began. No new deaths were announced in Pierce County Thursday.

The health department said issues with the state reporting system continued to create a lag in reporting cases and prevented them from having up-to-date numbers on testing.

According to an update from the Washington Department of Health Wednesday night, at least 6,189 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Pierce County, with a positivity rate of 5.7 percent.

Tacoma continues to have the highest number of confirmed cases in the county, with 184 illnesses, followed by Lakewood at 39 cases. Overall, Pierce County has the third highest case total in the state, behind King and Snohomish coutnies.
