Alaska Air slashes more flights, says federal grants 'critical' for months ahead

Alaska Air Group cut its flight capacity even deeper Monday, citing a demand that is now 80 percent below normal levels because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline has applied for government grants to help steer through its financial crisis.

The SeaTac-based airline group, which includes Horizon Air and its ground handling services subsidiary McGee Air Services, Inc., revealed the moves in a securities filing but didn't disclose how much federal government help it requested under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

"Given the uncertainty about when demand may bottom out and when a recovery may begin, the CARES Act payroll support grants will be critical as we weather the challenging months ahead," Alaska Air's securities filing stated.

An Alaska Air spokesperson also declined to reveal the dollar value of grants Alaska is seeking, nor would it disclose how many employees have applied to take unpaid leave.
