Inslee introduces grants to aid small businesses hit by economic decline

Gov. Jay Inslee announced Tuesday a new grant program for small businesses affected by the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The $5 million Working Washington Small Business Grant program will award businesses with fewer than 10 employees $10,000 to be used for rent, utility bills, inventory, supplies and other operating expenses.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted government officials to shutter all businesses deemed “nonessential,” closed restaurants and left hundreds of thousands out of work. The state, Inslee said, has hired hundreds of workers to process unemployment insurance claims.

Inslee characterized the program as a “short-term step” that must be part of a broader, long-term economic recovery strategy. The grant program, Inslee said during a news conference, “is just a start to what we need to do. We know we have a long economic recovery ahead of us."
