More than 700,000 workers in Washington directly impacted by COVID-19: study
The spread of the novel coronavirus has likely impacted more than 700,000 workers in Washington who have lost work as businesses across the region have had to shut down, a new study found.
The study, from Volusion, analyzes the share of people in each state who work in the retail trade and leisure and hospitality industries to figure out which states have had the most impacted workforces due to the virus.
"The crisis disproportionately affects the 21.3% of American workers in retail, leisure, and hospitality who not only face lack of work, but also suffer from long-standing, below-average wages," the study said.
In Washington, 21.3% of workers are in retail, leisure and hospitality, accounting for about 739,000 people. Washington ranks right in the middle, at No. 25, according to the study. Nevada, Hawaii and Florida have the greatest share of workers in these idustries, according to the study. The states with the least impacted workforces were Kansas and Minnesota, the study found.
