What's next for troubled West Seattle Bridge?

A decision on whether to repair the West Seattle Bridge may not happen until spring 2021 and after attempts to prevent the bridge from cracking further are completed.

During a briefing Monday for Seattle City Council members, Department of Transportation Director Sam Zimbabwe laid out a timeline for any possible repairs.

He said that work to stabilize and shore up the bridge needs to be evaluated first before a decision to repair the bridge can be made. The stabilization and shoring work won’t start until later this year and it's possible it won't be completed until spring of 2021.

“At the same time as we are doing some of the design work around shoring this spring, we will have a better understanding whether and if a repair is possible,” Zimbabwe told council members Monday during a virtual online meeting.

SDOT is proposing to spend $33 million to stabilize and shore up the bridge to make sure it’s safe from falling. Some the money will also go to maintenance of the lower swing bridge and detour and traffic mitigation.
