Study: Seattle ranks as third most unionized large metro area
The Seattle metro area ranked as the third most unionized large metro area across the country, according to a new study.
The study, from Construction Coverage, found the union membership rate in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area was 18.9%. The union representation rate in the metro area -- meaning the percentage of workers whose "terms of work are collectively negotiated" even if they were not members of the union -- was slightly higher, at 20.8%.
Across the Seattle metro, 381,489 workers were members of unions, according to the study. In Washington as a whole, 637,878 employees were members of unions.
The Seattle metro area ranked behind the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, California and New York-Newark-Jersey City metro areas, which both had slightly higher union membership rates.
