Thousands sign up for health insurance during Washington special enrollment; open 2 more weeks
More than 16,000 people across Washington have signed up for health insurance since the start of a special enrollment period due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The Washington Health Benefit Exchange in March announced people who didn't have health insurance could sign up through Washington Healthplanfinder during a special enrollment period originally scheduled to last through April 8, and then extended through May 8. People who want to sign up still have about two weeks left before the enrollment period closes.
Since the special enrollment period opened, 6,000 previously uninsured Washington residents signed up for health insurance, along with 10,000 people who had gone through a "qualifying event," which could include a job change or loss.
I want to remind individuals that they can get the coverage they need during this crisis through Washington Healthplanfinder, Exchange Chief Executive Officer Pam MacEwan said in a statement. I know there are thousands of people out there who have either lost their health insurance or were uninsured when this crisis began. There is a path to coverage ready for them.
