SDOT, Sound Transit mull possible collaboration on West Seattle Bridge project

The Seattle Department of Transportation and Sound Transit haven’t talked much yet about whether they will join forces to build the next West Seattle Bridge.

Both agencies will be looking to build new structures over the Duwamish Waterway in the next decade or so.

Concrete cracking forced the closure of the existing West Seattle highway bridge a month ago. SDOT Director Sam Zimbabwe said even if it’s repaired, the bridge will be replaced sooner than originally planned — in about 10 years. That aligns with the time Sound Transit planned to begin light rail service to West Seattle.

In the wake of declining revenues, Sound Transit is rethinking its capital plan to adjust to less revenue, and it may change timelines or project scopes for extensions that are not yet under construction, including the one to West Seattle.

Meanwhile, the West Seattle Bridge planning process will continue, and timing will depend on whether the existing bridge can be repaired and how long those repairs will last.

“With all of this uncertainty, it is too early to know when the revised plan will be able to support rail construction to West Seattle and whether that timing will align with the city's need to replace the highway bridge,” Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff said. “In the wake of this sudden loss of mobility for West Seattle residents, Sound Transit is certainly willing to partner with the city to determine whether this concept can be a win-win for all concerned.”
