Activist groups to Washington governor: Extend moratorium on service cutoffs by utilities
Gov. Jay Inslee should extend his moratorium that keeps Washington utilities from turning off essential services such as electric power, water and telecommunications beyond May 4, argued a letter to Inslee from 60 environmental, union consumer, and social activist groups argued.
Inslee is at the cusp of saying what rules, adopted to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, will be relaxed and when. The governor has broadly indicated that much will be retained after Monday.
"We know Washington state is facing unprecedented unemployment and severe economic impacts that will extend well into the future," the groups write. "Low-income households and those thrown into sudden unemployment will continue to face economic hardship well beyond May 4."
The letter is signed by a who's-who of Washington progressives including leaders of the Sierra Club, Washington State Labor Council, One America, Climate Solutions, Earth Ministry, Friends of the Columbia Gorge, the Teamsters Union, and Fuse Washington.
