Seattle mayor pans 'Tax Amazon' proposal, but it could go to public vote

With the mayor against it, Seattle's proposed emergency corporate payroll tax won't become law, clearing the way for two scenarios.

Passage of a less robust plan is one possibility and a public vote on Kshama Sawant and Tammy Morales' "Tax Amazon" proposal is the other.

"I'm very confident that we will win that election, just like we did last year when Amazon tried to buy the city council elections," Sawant said Wednesday.

Amazon spent big to defeat Sawant, a socialist who won re-election to her Capitol Hill/Central District seat by 1,775 votes.

Sawant said she is loath to pursue a referendum because the $200 million in Covid-19 relief funds in her package wouldn't reach low-income households until 2021.
