Bremerton to reopen walking trails in city parks next week

The city of Bremerton will partially reopen parks next week, Mayor Greg Wheeler announced Thursday.

Starting Monday, May 5, all walking trails and paths in city parks will be open to the public, according to a statement from the mayor's office. Basketball and tennis courts, athletic fields, parking lots, playgrounds, picnic shelters and bathrooms will remain closed.

Opening just the trails and paths will allow people to exercise while minimizing large social gatherings, Wheeler said.

"The virus hasn't left our community and the virus is deadly," Wheeler said. "We put a lot of work into flattening the curve and to me, this is the only prudent way to open a park."
