MultiCare Health announces furloughs for 6,000 employees to cover losses during COVID-19

The MultiCare Health System announced Wednesday thousands of employee furloughs to protect the organization long-term and cover more than $150 million in financial losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The health system said a group of 6,000 mainly non-clinical employees will be expected to take 17-shift furloughs between May 10 and Jan. 2, 2021.

A release from the MultiCare Health System said the furloughs will be the equivalent of one shift per pay period for the remainder of the year. The shift expectation will be pro-rated by FTE and shift length.

Hourly employees can choose between using paid-time off (PTO) or taking unpaid time for their 17 shifts, while salaried employees can choose between utilizing PTO or taking unpaid time, depending on if an employee chooses to take their furlough days in increments of single shifts or full work weeks.
