Island County gets go-ahead for Phase 2 of reopening economy

COUPEVILLE — Island County has gained approval to move to the second phase of the Governor’s Safe Start reopening plan.

The county’s public health department submitted an application on Friday, and was given the go-ahead by the state Secretary of Health on Saturday.

As a result, some restrictions have been eased in the county. Nearly all outdoor recreation involving groups of five people or fewer are allowed, though the county notes that camping will remain prohibited. Gatherings are also limited to five people. And limited non-essential travel will be OK, so long as it remains in proximity of a person’s home.

Many businesses can start back up, but only after implementing state guidelines. The types of businesses that can open include retail, real estate, professional services, in-home services, new construction, any remaining manufacturing and hair and nail salons. Restaurants can open for dining with less than 50 percent capacity and no more than 5 people per table.
