Volunteers turn out to clean up riot-torn downtown Seattle
SEATTLE - Volunteers turned out in force Sunday morning in Seattle to clean up some of the extensive damage from the previous night's riots and looting.
Windows were smashed, police cars were set ablaze and store interiors torn apart during the Saturday night mayhem that followed the death of a black man, George Floyd, in Minneapolis police custody.
And the Sunday morning daylight clearly showed the mess that was left behind - shattered glass all over the sidewalks, graffiti sprayed on building walls, ransacked stores and charred pavement. The Old Navy store and Urban Outfitters were especially hard hit during the riot.
Among those who showed up to help clean up the damage was Mayor Jenny Durkan.
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best said 27 people were arrested during the Saturday night rampage for a variety of offense, including assault, arson, property destruction and looting.
