Amid protests, Seattle will withdraw request to remove federal oversight over police

Seattle officials on Wednesday announced they intend to withdraw a motion that would end federal oversight of the Seattle Police Department after the agency has come under renewed scrutiny due to its use-of-force during protests.

The city last month filed a motion to lift the consent decree, saying the department was a "transformed" organization and had complied with the measures laid out.

But in recent days, SPD has faced questions over officers' use of flashbangs, tear gas and pepper spray on thousands of peaceful protesters demanding police accountability and justice.

City Attorney Pete Holmes in a statement Wednesday announcing the city’s decision to withdraw the motion referenced the massive protests that have happened across the country in response to the death of George Floyd, a black man who was allegedly killed by a white Minneapolis police officer after kneeling on Floyd’s neck for several minutes.
