Seattle City Council unclear what a defunded police department would look like

There are more questions than answers when it comes to what a defunded Seattle Police Department would look like.

Seattle City Council Member Teresa Mosqueda announced Monday she will use her privilege as Budget Committee Chairperson to launch an ‘inquest’ into the expenditures of SPD.

“I am committed to defunding the police and using most of that money, ideally 50 percent, to invest back into communities that we've failed," Mosqueda said.

But councilmembers acknowledge there’s no road map to defunding the department.

But Mosqueda made it clear, the intent was to reappropriate SPD funds to social services and housing instead of funding police responses.

It's so frustrating that the term defund is being used. It makes me think of defunding Planned Parenthood. The GOP likes to talk about how negative defunding the police is. It is important to have a clear plan and clear message. I like reimagine; reform, rebuild, restructure. It is important to collaborate with the community and with medical professionals, mental health professionals and social workers. That is a more positive message and approach.
