Mayor, police chief respond as CHAZ puts Seattle in national spotlight
SEATTLE - The emergence of CHAZ - Seattle's "Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone" - has exploded into a national news story, and Seattle's mayor and police chief both appeared on national TV Friday to respond to questions about what comes next.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan was asked on CNN how long the autonomous zone - a six-block area around the Seattle Police Department' East Precinct - could remain in place.
Her response: "I don't know, we could have a summer of love."
When the interviewer asked if she would tell that to the police who have been displaced from the precinct by protesters, Durkan said, "I want to be very clear ... that both exist in Seattle."
Meanwhile, Police Chief Carmen Best appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" and said she is "very angry" about the existence of CHAZ and wants to "make sure it gets resolved."
"We did not, for clarification, abandon the precinct. But we did have to remove some personnel for a short period of time and then it became unsafe," Best said. "We're currently working to get our officers back into the facility. We think it's really important that we have police presence there and that we're able to continue to do our work so, again, we did not abandon the precinct."
