Mercer Island Council Urges Juneteenth Celebrations
MERCER ISLAND, WA On Thursday, the Mercer Island City Council officially endorsed Friday, June 19, as Juneteenth 2020 on the island.
Islanders are encouraged to celebrate the holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States with social-distanced yard and park cookouts, picnics and music while bonding with neighbors.
"Mercer Island will join many other communities across the country to celebrate Juneteenth, when people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today," the Mercer Island city council wrote in the release.
ONE MI, the Mercer Island PTA, the Mercer Island School Board of Directors, and the Mercer Island Community Fund all back the endorsement and encourage residents to celebrate the holiday on Friday.
