Seattle, King County officials sign pledge to fight systemic racism, invest in Black communities
Elected officials in Seattle and across Washington are calling on other local leaders to sign onto a pledge vowing to take steps to fight systemic racism and invest in Black communities.
The pledge launched by Seattle City Council President M. Lorena González, King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay and Spokane City Councilmember Kate Burke includes advocating for structural changes, reviewing budgets for "inequities in our investment and expenditure of city dollars," reducing police brutality and eliminating excessive use of force.
The pledge also includes promises to push for progressive revenue reform and to invest in issues such as supportive housing, community mental health clinics and education opportunities.
"State and local governments have collectively underinvested in and starved communities of color for centuries," the pledge said.
