State mask mandate enforcement could fall on business owners

A mandate to wear a face mask has some businesses questioning how to enforce Washington’s newest statewide health directive.

Following Gov. Jay Inslee’s announcement earlier this week, police agencies began clarifying they only plan to educate people about this order, so any enforcement is likely to fall on business owners.

At a 7-Eleven in Kent, the foot traffic through the front doors is nearly nonstop. Workers said they plan to tread lightly if people come in without a mask.

“We don't want to get into an argument or fight,” said Rupali Handa, one of the employees.

1. We have 7-11's and Walmarts enforcing it here, but it's easy here with over 90% compliance...

It takes government and community leadership to change attitudes, and we have that.

For a while you saw defiance, but at a certain point defiance wasn't heroic any more. it was stupidity and just an asshole move. Masks are now just a act of life for now.

If we could do it, anyone could do it-- just show leadership.

2. NO body is going to enforce this...all the Sheriffs from Kittitas to Yakima to Snohomish

..they have all come out and said their job is to 'educate' and not enforce. Well at what point does it become enforceable? And how to educate? And by whom? Do we need to start shame staring? I hate doing that, but anyone inside a store at this point doesnt HAVE to be in there. If they have a breathing issue with masks, the stores have stated they will work with them. The stores (so far Fred Meyer) are handing free masks out...and wont the stores get fined for allowing them in? Bi Mart Yakima now takes customers temps before entry as well.

Now, I have some very dear friends who are trumpy but dont talk about it, trying to send me these fake cards that they got off FB that they THINK exempts them from wearing masks. From what I have read in the 2 newspapers i get, stores said they will work with those that cant wear masks to get them curb side delivery..not just willy nilly allow them inside the store. So people are going to show up with these fake cards and get really pissed that its not a get out of jail free card. Even the ADA has announced these cards are fake.

I can see treading lightly inside a 7-11 tho.. thats always an iffy environment.
