Poulsbo port commissioner arrested for vandalizing Chiefstick memorial
A Port of Poulsbo commissioner was arrested Saturday night for investigation of felony vandalism after a police officer allegedly witnessed him destroying a memorial to Stonechild Chiefstick, yelling F--- Stonychild.
When the Poulsbo police officers who arrived at the waterfront asked what he was doing, Commissioner Mark DeSalvo, 49, said he was using his freedom of speech, according to documents filed Monday charging DeSalvo in Kitsap County Superior Court with second-degree malicious mischief.
DeSalvo, who smelled of alcohol, according to the reports, was booked into the Kitsap County Jail but was then released.
When confronted by police, who described a 200-foot-by-100-foot section of roadway covered in shattered glass from broken prayer candles, DeSalvo used profanity to mock Chiefsticks name and insisted that he was doing the police department a favor because the officer-involved shooting was justified, according to court documents.
