Coronavirus Deaths Surpass 1,500 In Washington

SEATTLE, WA — State health officials confirmed 786 new coronavirus cases in Washington on Sunday and confirmed seven new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the state's death toll to 1,501.

The state has now confirmed 52,635 cases of the coronavirus. At least 919,347 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Washington, with the state's positivity rate holding steady at 5.7 percent.

The health crisis and subsequent economic fallout from COVID-19 have raised the stakes at Washington's state capital, where lawmakers are preparing to face an intimidating budget shortfall and close legislative races will take on extra significance this fall.

Democrats are hoping to widen their majorities in the state House and Senate in November's elections, which would give them a strong advantage when the legislature has to balance the state's $8.8 billion shortfall in January, the Seattle Times reported.
