Seattle to demolish Pier 58 on downtown waterfront in next 2 weeks
Seattle will begin demolishing Waterfront Park within the next two weeks as the structure continues to deteriorate.
The city has been planning the removal of Pier 58 (the parks official name) for years, with plans to build a new public park pier in its place between the Aquarium and Miners Landing/Great Wheel piers. That timeline accelerated after Pier 58 shifted by several inches away from land, forcing Seattle Parks and Recreation to close it off Aug 5.
Its normal for piers to shift over time. Seattle Parks has been monitoring the pier, according to a city statement, though the shift discovered Aug. 5 was an acceleration beyond previously observed shifts.
The city is currently working to complete the necessary environmental permits and authorizations and expects to complete removal by early 2021.
