Critical fire weather conditions continue in Washington due to persistent hot temperatures, NWS says

Unprecedented fires have raged across the West Coast all week, and as of Thursday, fire conditions in Washington remained critical due to high temperatures and low humidity, the National Weather Service said in a news release.

In Western Washington, which has been hit by destructive brushfires near Sumner, Enumclaw, Graham and Bonney Lake, NWS had high confidence that "rapid fire growth is likely for any fire starts today." The news release also said certain groups — homeless, elderly, children and those with health issues — were most at risk from reduced air quality.

Fires across Washington have burned over 480,000 acres, Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday after touring damage in Pierce County.

The air quality index was measured at 140 in Seattle by AirNow, which would rate it as "unhealthy for sensitive groups."
