Analyst: Trouble at Boeing's South Carolina 787 plant could hinder consolidation
Boeings South Carolina 787 assembly plant is plagued by so many woes that consolidating Dreamliner production in one location doesn't make sense over the long term, a veteran aerospace analysts said.
Bainbridge Island aerospace analyst Scott Hamilton offered that view in a piece he published on his Leeham aerospace website.
"Everetts workers are unionized by the International Association of Machinists District 751, but this isnt a union story," Hamilton wrote. "This is a story about better performance in assembling airplanes and serving customers. Not that Everett hasnt had its own quality control issues. But they pale in comparison with Boeing South Carolina."
Boeing CEO David Calhoun revealed during a July earnings call that the jet maker had launched a study to examine the feasibility of consolidating all 787 production in one location but said the Chicago-based company had not made any final decision.
